GLP-1 side effects & safety.
GLP-1 and dual incretin medications can be helpful for eligible patients, but they are prescription medications with real risks. Wexi screens for contraindications and review triggers before a clinician makes a decision.
Common side effects
- Nausea, early fullness, constipation, diarrhea, reflux, or abdominal discomfort.
- Headache, fatigue, or injection-site irritation.
- Side effects can be stronger during treatment changes or when eating patterns shift quickly.
Reasons treatment may not be appropriate
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, MEN2, personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, active eating disorder, active suicidal ideation, severe gastroparesis, recent pancreatitis, semaglutide allergy, type 1 diabetes in an obesity-only workflow, BMI below threshold, or age below platform minimum may prevent treatment.
Reasons for closer review
Insulin or sulfonylurea use, advanced kidney disease, cirrhosis, bariatric surgery history, pancreatitis history, gallbladder disease, severe GERD, BMI over 50, age over 75, psychiatric hospitalization, prior GLP-1 intolerance, active malignancy, unexplained symptoms, diabetic retinopathy, or heavy alcohol use may trigger additional physician review.
